Li Guo received her BSc from the Geology and Petroleum Exploration Department of the South-West Petroleum Institute (SWPI), China in 1982. Li was an assistant lecturer and lecturer in the SWPI from 1982 to 1987. She was a visiting scholar and a research assistant in the Department of Geology, Cardiff University from 1987 to 1990. In 1993 she received a PhD from Cardiff University for her research on the facies and diagenesis of Quaternary travertines of Italy.
She joined CASP in 1994 and has worked on carbonate diagenesis and porosity evolution in some of the major hydrocarbon sedimentary basins across China, Novaya Zemlya, Arctic Russia, and the Oman Mountains. She is currently project leader of the Continental Carbonate Project, Lacustrine Coquina & Spherulite Study.
